I paint mostly in acrylic on a traditional rabbit skin gesso ground on board. Because this gesso retains the brush stroke texture it becomes part of the painting itself.

Although I grew up in Pakuranga, I have been living in the Waitakeres for almost 20 years, where I am surrounded by native bush and birdlife. We live in and are part of a fragile landscape that needs to be looked after and my work expresses the importance of these places - our landscapes can be easily ruined and birdlife driven out by encroaching urbanisation. I have always been drawn to the work of Don Binney, drawing inspiration from the environment in which I live and work, using natural objects as symbols. More recently the abstract works of Kandinsky and the expressionists of the
early 20th century have played a strong part in influencing my work - exploring a way to use the ideals of colour, form and surface qualities, adapting them to the New Zealand flora and fauna.
